A short while after I posted my entry, the mechanic called me back. He was clearly angry and upset, and asked "Who the HELL did this brake job?"

As it turned out, the prior mechanic had damaged a part on the front end. The Sears guy said "I don't know how it managed to hold together, it was hanging by a thread".

$700 later, it's fixed. After having shelled out $450 just three weeks ago. Of course, that was money intended to purchase the appliances I needed for the new house, since there's no stove or refrigerator? I'd planned to replace the deck and put what was left towards the appliances. So now what do I do? Skip doing the deck and hope to hell it holds together so I can get a stove and refrigerator, or do I just go to the store every day and use my gas grill to cook things outside?

My landlord had a good suggestion, he said to check craigslist for my area. He said that often people who are remodelling a kitchen will give away the old stove.

There wasn't one there today, not a gas one, but there was a free electric one, so I suspect I'll find a gas one if I just check faithfully. That solves part of the problem at least, but ugh.

I'm intending to file a consumer complaint to try to recover some of the money, but that is going to take time. Not a happy camper...

jeez. it's always something, innit? i heartily endorse the idea of going to town legally on the original mechanic.
