This has not been one of the better trips.
The trailer part was fine, but I had to go slower for safety. I think I mentioned I had decided not to sedate the cats as it can make them sick, and I didn't want to be dealing with vomiting, unhappy kitties. We retrieved our cat Zarozinia from the neighbor (she's kind of the neighborhood slut, she did this with another neighbor as well, but she always comes back to us sooner or later) and got her in a carrier. The latch looked a bit messed up, so I took the precaution of tying the door.
We were almost through Connecticut when we realized she had managed to escape. Knowing what a stinker she can be, we had taken the precaution of bringing a lightweight laundry bag with us to cover the carrier with, so after I had pulled over, we returned her to the carrier, covered it completely with the bag and tied it.
We hadn't even reached the New York State line and she was out again! I went to an all night Walgreens and bought some lightweight rope and we threaded it through the door and tied it tight. This put an end to the escaping, but she meowed almost the whole time, and every time the others would quiet down, she would get them started again.
And then we got to the new place, and two cats are gone.
Despite all my precautions and the sealing off of the windows and all, Arioch and Binky managed to pull open one of the heater registers and get out. I am petrified a coyote got them or they got lost. I'm going to ask around tomorrow, and we'll put out some food to encourage them, but I feel like I've lost a couple of children and I don't know what I'll do if we can't find them. I am hoping they are nearby but hiding and that someone has seen them.
I'm going to try to get some sleep--we head back for another load of stuff tomorrow evening.
Update: Just after I posted, Ben found Binky outside. That makes me hopeful that we'll find Arioch too... I'm really worried about him. I hope he's okay.
