At first, we laughed.
Jun. 14th, 2007 12:07 amWe thought it was some kind of bizarre prank, like maybe a hacker had gotten into the AP and Reuters news systems..
It started to sink in when the people started coming. Maryland plates, Delaware plates, and even a few from Ohio. Just a few at first, but now it's a steady stream.
We don't have room for them all.
Hey, don't give me that look. We're a small town, last count I think we had 4000 people. We could and would absorb some of the refugees, no problem. It's not like any of us want to see people suffer.
But the stores are just about out of food because everyone has been stocking up, and we don't know if there's going to be any trucks coming in for a while. Are we supposed to starve because these fools didn't make the most basic preparations for themselves?
Some of them are just plain nasty--flashing their money around like it's worth something and muttering things under their breath about inbreeding and ignorant hicks. Guess the shoe is on the other foot now, eh?
Neighbor said they've blocked the highway ramps and are turning people away unless they have family here, but some are getting in on the back roads. The guy up the hill shot two people trying to steal some of his livestock.
It's going to get worse before it gets better. There's a group of neighbors running an informal patrol of the neighborhood, and both of my roommates will be joining them tonight while I stay home with the girls and try to hang on to some semblance of normal family life.
I'm glad I let them teach me how to handle the rifle.
